Lunching with SeaMonkeys

I peel the fuzzy skin off gently with my teeth
Revealing the fleshy golden interior
Sweltering with sweet-tart juice.
I bring it to my lips, and suck the tissue
Savoring the summery taste
And the stinging sensation on my cracked lips.
I ignore the yellow nectar running down my fingers
Leaving raindrops of wetness on my heather pants.

With smiling blue globes, she offers the can
Blue, fizzing, smiling with orangey goodness.
"Shake before drinking" it warns
But it's already open.
We pass it around, sharing it
We would have fit in well at Woodstock.
It arrives from blond midlands
And lands on the bumpy pink landing strip in the
Mountains that tower above.
It runs down the side of the mountain, and lands in the valley
Where it is ravenously absorbed by the parched earth.

No wonder I feel so poetic.

Written at the poetry reading today. I always feel very poetic when eating fruit. There were some good poems at that there reading.

A Story without an ending

The name’s Charming. Says so on the door: P. Charming and H. Dumpty, Private Eyes. Dumpty was offed by the King’s men two years back, but business has been too slow to get the sign changed. He was investigating a case concerning the King, and the King doesn’t like being looked into. Yolk and shell all over the street for months.
I was nursing what I thought would be my last glass of booze for a while like I would my dying father. I was stone broke, and, unfortunately, rent came before juice. I was down and out until the dame came in and dropped a hundred dollar bill on my desk.
I got nothing against dames. I’ve dated half the girls in this kingdom- Snowy White, Cindy Ella (she was a problem, always had to be home before midnight), that narc girl, Rapunzel (another problem, with that hair), hell, you name’m, I’ve taken them all to the Palace for drinks.
But this new dame was pug-ugly. Her next-to-nothing eyebrows gave her a surprised look, but that’s not what the rest of her mug conveyed. Her bright red lips were pursed in anger, and her dark eyes glittered in a sinister way. Her sunken cheeks made her look like Olivia Twist. Her clothes, however, led me to believe otherwise- fur, pearls, and silk.
“Mr. Charming, I need your help. I need you to find my tarts.”
My eyebrow arched in shock. Tarts? Like hookers? I asked her, trying to be as tactful as possible.
“No, tarts. I run a bakery. Queenies?” she shrilled, as if she expected me to jump for joy at the fact that I was in the presence of the owner of Queenie’s Bakery. “They’ve been stolen from their display case.”
I smirked. “Look, Lady, you’re talking about a run-of-the-mill robbery. You want the police, not a gumshoe.” Though I knew I was loosing any chance of a drink in the next month, I shoved the cash back at her. After all, even I have my standards.
“You don’t understand,l Mr. Charming. One of those raspberry tarts had a diamond necklace in it. It’s worth a million dollars, and I need it back.”
My head snapped up. If this dame had a million worth of gems hidden in a pie, she must be rolling in it, which meant there was at least five grand in it for me.
` “Any suspects, Miss-“ I faltered, and looked hard at her, hoping she’d throw me a bone.
“Harts. Queenie Harts,” she practically shrieked.
“Any suspects, Ms. Harts? Anyone else know about the rocks? Staff, for example…”
“The only other person who knew about the necklace was my brother, Nevin Harts. His friends, if he indeed has any, call him Knave. His girl friend, Alison Wunderland, has been haggling for a ring, but Knave is dead broke. I think Alison has been cheating on him,” she added as she leaned in even closer, so close I could smell her scent, flowery and floury. “She’s loose.” As much as I wanted this case, this girl’s voice was starting to grate on my nerves like cheese. It was steadily high pitched, like her red, talon-like fingernails scraping down a new blackboard.
“Any ideas where I’d find your brother, Ms Harts?” I asked as I started to fill my pockets with what any self respecting private eye never leaves home without: a handgun, notebook, a few pay-off bucks, and my good-luck picture of the Queen. I swung my trench on, and swept out the door. The dame followed me into the rain.
“I’m coming with you, Mr. Charming,” she trilled. “I want to see Knave get arrested.” I grimaced at her mink and heels, but I had no choice if I wanted the cash I knew was in it for me. We walked down the dock, me surefooted, Queenie Harts wavering next to the dark, churning water, where many a criminal had drowned themselves. Step-mothers, mostly, child abusers.
“He’s going to be down at the Wall. He’s always drunk.” I blanched. Since Humpty’s murder at the infamous bar, I’d avoided the Wall like the Black Death. The sidewalk outside the wall was still stained yolk-yellow, and smelled faintly of omelet. We walked through the downpour, Queenie under her small silk umbrella, me getting soaked to the skin.
“Prince!” yelled Doc, the dwarf bartender, as we entered. “Long time no see! Who’s your lady friend?” The old place hadn’t changed a bit. The other six dwarves mixing screwdrivers and grasshoppers behind the bar, and Snowy serving drinks, the same as they ever were. I led Queenie to my old table, where she sat nervously.
“Your treat. Whadda you want?” I smiled, and she obligingly fished out her purse, and told me to get her a sunrise. I took her money and picked my way over to the bar.
“Hey Doc. How goes it?” I murmured, as was expected in the bar. “I’ll have a sunrise and a Bloody Mary.” I slipped him two bills, and leaned in ever closer. “Has a Knave Hearts been in here? That dame’s his sister. She’s, um, looking for him.”
Doc smirked a menacing, disbelieving smile. “Eh, Knave ain’t been in here all day, which is unusual. He’s here daily with that Wunderland gal of his by Dopey hour, not to mention Grumpy, Bashful, Sneezy, Sleepy, and Happy hours.” He grinned at me, and I took that information along with the drinks back to the table.
“Hello, Princey,” I heard behind me. Drinks still in hand, I turned to receive a bony kiss on each cheek from Snowy. Her moon white skin accented her full, crimson lips and ebony hair as I remembered.
“Hey, Snowy. D’you know anything about a Nevin Harts?”
“Oh, sure I do! Knave! He and,” the look on her face changed from adoration to distates, “Alison are in here all day, starting with dry martinis, ending with neat gin.” She beamed at me, nodded towards the table where Rod “Wicked” Wolff was snapping at her, and slinked away.
“Doc says Knave hasn’t been here all day, Ms. Harts.” I set her sunrise in front of her, and started slurping my Bloody Mary like it was mother’s milk. “No one’s seen him all day. Any other haunts? Where’s he live?” This guy sounded like a boozehound who dragged his girl to the bar and drunk himself into a stupor, but I’d trained myself not to go on first impressions. Even so, I expected him to live around the Village, the area for freaks and homeless, where all the drunks lived.
“He’s here all day, but he lives in the Enchanted Forest,” she said nonchalantly. My brow furrowed. The Enchanted Forest was the poshest building in the city, one that no drunk could afford.
“Knave lives in the Enchanted Forest?” I had to almost shout over the noise that had entered the bar with the mice that were smacking left and right with their white canes.
“Yah, I lent him a few grand for it, but he still hasn’t paid me back. Little bastard,” she spat as she took a dainty sip of her sunrise. My Bloody Mary was long gone, and I was yearning for another. I excused myself, and wove my way between the table to the bar.
“’Nother Bloody Mary, Doc. Actually, better make it a neat vodka- I’m going to need it for this case.” I watched him pour a small glass, and I urged him to fill it to the brim.
